Responsibilities




Florida State University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position in Interior Design program at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

We seek a collaborative educator and scholar who will contribute to undergraduate and graduate education through innovative teaching, research and/or creative scholarship, and student mentorship. The successful candidate will advance human-centered design, evidence-based inquiry, and creative and critical thinking while preparing students to address complex challenges in the built environment.

Candidates should demonstrate expertise that complements and expands the program’s strengths and the ability to connect design inquiries with professional practice. We welcome contributions to interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship, graduate education, and the thoughtful integration of emerging technologies into design.


Teach undergraduate and graduate studio, lecture, and/or seminar courses in interior design.
Contribute expertise in Construction Documents, Construction Systems, Commercial Office and Hospitality Design, with flexibility to support other areas of the curriculum.
Develop and sustain a program of research and/or creative scholarship, disseminate work through appropriate peer-reviewed or juried outlets, and pursue external funding opportunities.
Mentor undergraduate and graduate students; advise graduate research and creative work; and chair or serve on thesis committees.
Participate in curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation activities.
Contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration and the integration of research, creative inquiry, and professional practice into teaching.
Provide service to the academic unit, College, University, community, and profession, as appropriate to rank and assignment.
Participate in relevant academic and/or professional organizations.







Qualifications




An earned master’s or doctoral degree in interior design, interior architecture, architecture, or a closely related field with substantial working experience
Demonstrated teaching experience with Adobe Creative Cloud and Autodesk products, and familiarity with rendering & 3D visualization software (e.g., Enscape).
Demonstrated ability to teach interior design studios and related courses effectively.
Demonstrated ability to develop a sustained program of research and/or creative scholarship.
Proficiency in design communication and the application of relevant design technologies in teaching, practice, and/or scholarship.
Effective oral, written, and visual communication skills.
Ability to collaborate with colleagues and support student learning and development.

Candidates for appointment at the Assistant Professor rank should demonstrate promise in teaching, research and/or creative scholarship, and service.

Candidates for appointment at the Associate Professor rank should demonstrate a sustained record of teaching effectiveness, research and/or creative achievement, and service commensurate with appointment at that rank at Florida State University.







Preferred Qualifications




An MFA, M. Arch, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in interior design, interior architecture, architecture, or a closely related field, completed by the appointment start date.
Expertise in emerging design technologies (e.g., AI, VR, AR, etc.) and their thoughtful application to design education and inquiry (research/creative components).
NCIDQ certification, architectural licensure or NCARB certification, and/or other relevant professional credentials.
Teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
Professional practice experience in interior design, interior architecture, architecture, or related areas.
Experience mentoring graduate students and supporting their thesis research or creative scholarship.
Experience with interdisciplinary teaching, research, or collaborative design practice.
Evidence of external funding activity or potential to develop externally supported projects.
Familiarity with Council for Interior Design Accreditation standards and accreditation processes.

Considerations




This is a Faculty position.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check.

This position is being advertised as open until filled and will begin Fall 2027.
