Technical Designer

Technical Designer
Hartford Home Design is seeking a detail-oriented Technical Designer to translate residential design concepts into accurate, organized, construction-ready documentation.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys the technical side of residential design: drafting, Chief Architect, construction documentation, specifications, and turning creative ideas into information that contractors and trades can confidently build from.

The Technical Designer works closely with the Design Project Manager and Principal Designer and is responsible for producing high-quality technical deliverables on schedule.

Key Responsibilities
Drafting & Chief Architect

Create and maintain accurate residential project models and drawings in Chief Architect.
Produce existing-condition, demolition, proposed floor, electrical, lighting, finish, cabinetry, elevation, section, and detail drawings as required.
Develop 2D and 3D documentation and renderings to support design development and client presentations.
Incorporate approved revisions accurately across project documents.

Permit & Construction Documents

Prepare residential permit drawing packages based on project scope and company standards.
Coordinate information from designers, contractors, engineers, vendors, and consultants.
Incorporate internal review comments and permit revisions.
Identify missing or conflicting information before documents are issued.

Trade Documentation
Prepare clear documentation for contractors, subcontractors, and vendors, including items such as:

Cabinetry and millwork
Tile layouts
Plumbing fixtures
Lighting and electrical
Flooring and finishes
Appliances and hardware
Installation details

Specifications

Prepare and maintain project specification books.
Document manufacturer, model, finish, dimensions, quantities, and other technical product information.
Coordinate specifications with drawings and approved selections.
Maintain current product documentation, cut sheets, and installation requirements.

Quality Control

Review your work for accuracy, completeness, coordination, and constructability before submission.
Cross-check drawings, specifications, selections, and schedules for inconsistencies.
Flag unresolved design or technical questions early.
Maintain organized, current project documentation and drawing versions.

Design & Construction Support

Support the design team with space planning, product research, technical information, modeling, and revisions.
Respond to technical questions that arise during construction.
Update drawings and documentation for approved changes.

What Success Looks Like
You consistently produce accurate, organized technical documentation that requires minimal correction, meets project deadlines, and gives contractors and vendors the information they need to execute the design successfully.
You don't simply draft what you're given—you notice when dimensions conflict, information is missing, or something doesn't make sense and raise the issue before it becomes a field problem.

Qualifications

Strong proficiency in Chief Architect
Experience creating residential construction or technical design drawings
Understanding of residential remodeling and construction
Familiarity with kitchens, bathrooms, cabinetry, lighting, plumbing, finishes, and interior detailing
Strong understanding of dimensions, scale, and spatial relationships
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
Strong communication and willingness to ask questions when information is incomplete
Ability to receive feedback and incorporate it consistently

Experience preparing residential permit documents, trade documents, and specification books is strongly preferred.
Who You'll Work With The Technical Designer reports to the Design Project Manager and works closely with the Principal Designer, construction team, vendors, and trade partners.
This is primarily a technical production role. Creative input is welcomed, but primary creative direction and overall project-management responsibility sit elsewhere on the design team.
